Mizoram's Wetland "PALA" Gets RAMSAR Recognition

Bongaigaon Times: 29/07/2022: Union forest minister Bhupendra Yadav on Tuesday (26th July 2022) said that five more Indian wetlands have got Ramsar recognition as wetland of international importance, including “Pala” wetland of Mizoram.

Mizoram's Wetland  "PALA" Gets RAMSAR Recognition

Pala wetland is located in Siaha district, Mizoram. The wetland is situated about 6 km from the nearest village called Phura, and falls under the Phura forest range of the mara autonomous district council region. Spread across 1850 hectares, it is the largest natural wetland in the state of Mizoram.

Other 4 new wetlands added to the list of Ramsar sites are “Karikili bird sanctuary in Tamil Nadu , Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest in Tamil Nadu. Pichavaram Mangrove in Tamil Nadu, Sakhya sagar in Madhya Pradesh .

RAMSAR CONVENTION:

The Ramsar convention, which was initiated in the year 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar sites. India has the highest number of Ramsar sites among the south Asian nations. Currently, India has a total of 54 Ramsar designated wetlands.

The Ramsar convention on wetlands defines wetlands as “arears of marsh, fen, peat land or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six months.
