Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Seeks Rs 1000-Crore Aid for New Shillong City Project

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has appealed to the central government for a financial aid package of Rs 1000 crore to support the ambitious New Shillong city project. During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, July 15, Sangma highlighted the necessity for substantial funding to drive various developmental initiatives aimed at transforming the state.


Chief Minister Sangma stressed the significance of the New Shillong city project in alleviating traffic congestion, enhancing the state's aesthetics, and promoting its rich cultural heritage. The proposed project will span nearly 25 acres of land and is viewed as a crucial step to stimulate economic growth and create new opportunities for the people of Meghalaya.

“We have requested financial aid of Rs 1000 crore for the New Shillong city project,” stated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. He emphasized that the project is not merely about infrastructure development but also aims to improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the state's overall appeal.

Alongside his meeting with the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Sangma also held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These talks centered on pending projects critical to the state's development. The Chief Minister expressed optimism that with the central government's support, these projects could be expedited, leading to significant improvements in the state's infrastructure and public services.

Additionally, Chief Minister Sangma met with Union Minister of Food Processing Chirag Paswan to explore opportunities for expanding the food processing industry in Meghalaya. This sector is viewed as a crucial area for economic development, with the potential to create jobs and increase income for local farmers and entrepreneurs.

These high-level discussions are part of the Meghalaya government's comprehensive strategy to generate new opportunities across the state. The government is eager to leverage central assistance to drive these initiatives forward, ensuring that the benefits reach all sections of society.
